275 euro* bonus per year thanks to GHG quota

November 22, 2021

Owners of purely electrically powered cars can once again make their purchase worth its weight in gold: From January 2022, they can sell their CO2 savings for cash over several years. Those who opt for the CO2 bonus from e-mobilio will secure up to 275 euros* in the first year, and probably even more in subsequent years. This is made possible by the legally stipulated greenhouse gas reduction quota (GHG quota).

The GHG quota is primarily an instrument for climate protection, as the transport sector is one of the largest sources of CO2 emissions. 146 million tons were consumed in Germany in 2020. In order to achieve the target of just 85 million tons in 2030, politicians have come up with various incentives. For example, buyers of an electric car not only benefit from the purchase premium, but also from the greenhouse gas reduction quota (GHG quota) as the owner of an all-electric car. This enables owners of an electric vehicle to register and obtain certification from the Federal Environment Agency via e-mobilio in order to sell CO2 savings.

The certificate, in turn, is worth hard cash for companies subject to the quota. Since 2015, mineral oil manufacturers in Germany, among others, have been obliged by the GHG quota to reduce the CO2 emissions of their fuels and only produce a certain amount. This quota currently stands at six percent, but is set to rise to 25 percent by 2030. If an oil company breaches these requirements, fines will be imposed. Companies can avoid this penalty by selling biodiesel and bioethanol, installing their own charging stations at their filling stations, offering green electricity or purchasing GHG quotas from third parties. In contrast to the purchase premium, the GHG quota is not available for plug-in hybrids, but only for purely electric cars.

The CO2 bonus from e-mobilio

It couldn't be easier for our customers: register once for the CO2 bonus from January 2022, upload your vehicle registration document and receive payment after a brief check and confirmation by the Federal Environment Agency! Incidentally, the GHG quota can be used not only by private owners, but also by commercial customers and fleet managers. More on this soon at CO2.auto.

*) The CO2 bonus may vary slightly as it depends on the fluctuating market price.
