Installation: step-by-step installation of wallboxes
Even skilled DIY enthusiasts should not install their wallbox themselves. This is because installation and the home check are a professional matter.
Even if you are a dedicated and skilled craftsman: The installation of a wallbox belongs in professional hands, not only to avoid damage to property and personal injury. The law simply prohibits installation by a layperson. All good reasons to contact a licensed electrician. We will explain to you how to find a suitable partner for the installation and guide you step by step until your wallbox is ready for use.
DIY for wallbox installation? Not a good idea.
Step 1: Commission a specialist electrical company
A qualified specialist electrical company will guide you through the entire installation process and relieve you of time-consuming research and work. Another advantage is that they are also liable for the professional execution of the work. e-mobilio will be happy to put you in touch with a qualified specialist company in your area.
Step 2: Home check
Before any further steps can be taken, you should check whether a wallbox installation is generally possible. The home check involves an on-site inspection of the planned installation location by a qualified electrician. This involves checking the house connections and conditions on site for a safe installation of the charging solution and, if necessary, making recommendations for adapting the building technology. You should definitely think about this: Where is my car parked? Where is the charging flap? Where does the power cable come out of the wall? Could the charging cable become a tripping hazard for me during the charging process?
e-mobilio offers two different home checks:
- Video installation check: The customer uses a video call to digitally guide an e-mobilio expert to all relevant locations. The customer then receives documentation of the check. You can find out more in our explanatory video.
- On-site installation check: An electrical installer comes to the customer's home and inspects the conditions on site.
Intermediate step: Laying the cable
If there is no power connection in the garage, this must first be installed. The house distribution box must also be adapted to this - including labeling. It may be necessary to break through the wall for the cable connection from the wallbox to the distribution box. But don't worry: a cable is not large, which is why a simple drill hole is often sufficient. This service is also usually carried out by your installation partner. However, only certain specialist companies are suitable for excavation work. By the way: If in doubt, opt for a longer cable. Shortening is easy, but lengthening requires a lot of effort.
Step 3: Register or obtain approval for the wallbox
In principle, there is no approval requirement, only a registration requirement. Specifically, this means that wall charging stations must be registered with the responsible grid operator. Important: This step must be taken before installation , but is not subject to approval.
Intermediate step: Implement the necessary measures
In rare cases, the grid operator does not issue approval for more powerful chargers. There may be various reasons for this: the cables, fuses or connections. The exact reason is usually stated in the rejection notice. In order to be able to install a wallbox anyway, these weak points can be eliminated - but at the applicant's expense.
Step 4: Installation
Once the grid operator has approved your application, you have four months to install your charging station. You should leave the installation and commissioning to your electrician.
What the wallbox installation costs
The cost of the device itself is a major item - it usually costs between €500 and €2,000. For the home check and installation by a professional, you need to add another €900 to €2,000. If changes to the fuse box, wall breakthroughs or longer cable runs are added afterwards, this can cost several hundred euros more. In some cases, registration with the grid operator also costs money.
The rule of thumb should always be: Do not skimp on the quality of the wallbox and its installation!
