Problems & solutions for fleet electrification

Fleet managers and procurement departments face a wide variety of challenges with regard to the company's own charging structure. We tell you how to solve them.

Around 573,000 vehicles with electric drives were newly registered in Germany in 2024, as reported by the Federal Motor Transport Authority. A good 381,000 of these vehicles were purely electric cars, which corresponds to a share of 13.5 percent in 2024. Fleet vehicles play a key role in this development. Company fleets are literally a driver of change, as around 50 percent of all electric vehicles in Germany are registered by companies.

While questions regarding vehicle selection and vehicle range have largely been clarified, fleet managers and procurement departments face various challenges with regard to a company's own charging structure: Where should the charging stations be installed? What are the total costs? Who will be responsible for operation and maintenance? How can the various stakeholders - facility managers, landlords, energy suppliers, installation companies, employees - be managed throughout the process?

Three aspects are particularly important

  1. The path to fleet electrification and its feasibility are strongly determined by the usage profiles of the fleet. For example, sales managers who meet customers across the country have very different requirements for the range and charging needs of their electric vehicles than service staff or employees who work in the office. Taking such considerations into account is key to the success of holistic solutions for home charging, on-site charging and the use of public charging points.

  2. In addition to the investment costs for the charging infrastructure, it must be possible to estimate the operating costs for future charging. The use of intelligent hardware that takes dynamic load management into account enables customers to keep operating costs low and at the same time contribute to relieving the burden on the public grid. Companies are also well advised to invest in their own solutions as, according to a study by Statista and a Hamburg-based green energy provider, charging costs at public charging stations are significantly higher on average than at private charging stations or at the employer's premises.

  3. Companies with locations in different cities, regions or countries need a strategy that takes into account where the implementation of charging infrastructure projects should be prioritized and in what order. Here it is very helpful to have a reliable project partner who provides support across all locations for all necessary services, from technical project planning and implementation to the operation of back-end software and hardware.
